About this course

Corruption is one of the most serious obstacles to development in Ghana and across the world. It diverts money from schools, clinics and roads; it shuts out people who cannot afford to pay; and it erodes the trust that public institutions depend on.

It is also easier to condemn in general than to recognise in the moment. Most people who become involved in corruption did not set out to be corrupt. They made a series of small decisions, accepting a gift, doing a favour, looking away once, each of which seemed reasonable at the time.

This course equips you to recognise corruption in its different forms, to understand why it happens, to report it safely, to handle the conflicts of interest and gifts that catch people most often, and to help prevent it in the institutions where you work. It draws throughout on Ghana’s own laws, institutions and experience.

What you will be able to do

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  1. Define corruption, identify its main forms, and explain how it is measured.
  2. Explain why corruption happens, using the fraud triangle, and what it costs.
  3. Describe the protections of the Whistleblower Act and the channels for reporting corruption safely.
  4. Recognise and manage conflicts of interest, and tell an acceptable gift from an improper one.
  5. Describe Ghana’s anti-corruption laws and institutions.
